Deworming Your Dog

Dewormer for dogs comes in various different forms; liquid, pills, paste and powder.  All dewormers are measured by weight so it is important to know the weight of you dog.  Overestimating is better than underestimating because not giving you dog enough dewormer will act as if you didn't give any. 

Now all dewormer no matter what form should be ingested at one time and on an empty stomach.  You should know what its the best form to give to your dog because that will determine what form of dewormer you should buy.  Its like picking out medicines for yourself, is it easier to drink the liquid or swallow the pill.  Remember when giving the dewormer that they ingest all the medicine at one time so it you need to mix it in with a hotdog or a can of dog food its best to do so to ensure the medicine is ingested.

Also keep in mind that the different forms of dewormers take care of different types of worms.  Below is a list of the different type of worms and a little information about the worms.

Intestinal worms have the potential to cause serious damage to the animal’s health if left untreated. Tapeworms, roundworms and hookworms are zoonotic — meaning they can all be transmitted to humans!

Tapeworms

• Common throughout the United States and Canada

Types of Tapeworms

1. Tapeworm (Dipylidium Caninum)
2. Tapeworm (Taenia Pisiformis)

Cause of Infection

• Transmission through ingestion of fleas
  
• mother's milk
  
• uterus
  
• Ingestion of infected mammals
  
• contact larvae in the soil

Symptoms

• Asymptomatic
  
• diarrhea
  
• Intestinal blockage

Roundworms

• The most common internal parasite of dogs throughout the world
• Almost all puppies less than 3 months of age are infected with roundworms
• Widespread throughout the United States and Canada
• Each female can shed up to 100,000 eggs per day
• Eggs can survive in soil for years
• In just one week, two puppies infected with roundworms can shed over 20 million eggs, contaminating a 2,800 square-foot backyard

Types of Roundworms

1. Roundworm (Toxocara Canis)
2. Roundworm (Toxascaris Leonina)

Cause of infection :

• Transmission through mother's milk
• uterus
• contact eggs in soil
• ingestion of infected mammals

Symptoms:

• Anemia
• pale gums
• diarrhea
• weight loss
• itching

Hookworms

• Common throughout the United States and Canada
• 19% of dogs are infected with hookworms
• One adult female hookworm is reported to produce as many as 25,000 eggs a day
  

Types of Hookworms

• Hookworm (Ancylostoma Caninum)
• Hookworm (Ancylostoma Braziliense)
• Hookworm (Uncinaria Stenocephala)

Causes of infection:

• Transmission through the mother's milk
• uterus
• ingestion of infected mammals
• contact larvae in soil

Symptoms:

• Pot bellied appearance
• weight loss
• lethargy
• vomiting
• diarrhea
